Chaeyeon Kang (b. 1999) translates bodily experiences into layered images and material surfaces, looking at the relationship between the body, memory and digitally mediated images.
Working across printmaking, painting, biomaterials and expanded media, her practice draws on experiences of the female body, including illness, hormonal change, vulnerability, decay and renewal. Using medical imagery, organic textures and personal bodily experiences, she creates tactile surfaces that suggest skin, tissue, residue and fragile landscapes. She often places organic and biodegradable materials alongside images of smooth digital femininity, bringing the vulnerable physical body into contrast with idealised bodies that are endlessly reproduced online.
Through layering, staining, repetition and material transformation, her work considers the body as something changeable, shaped by both physical experience and digital images. Chaeyeon is a Seoul- and London-based artist. She holds an MA in Contemporary Art Practice from the Royal College of Art and a BFA in Fine Art from the Korea National University of Arts.
